During the winter of 1930-31, the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago organised a Persian Expedition to conduct excavations in the East and Southeast of the Mesopotamian plain. James Henry Breasted, the Head of the Institute, was granted a concession to also excavate Persepolis under the direction of Ernst Herzfeld. Breasted was lated quoted as stating that the discoveries made in Persepolis were "the most important in the history of archeology."

 

This photograph is a press print dated Janaury 1933 from the Associated Press which was used for an article reporting on the expedition's discoveries.
